“Dressed like Gods” Mexican Archeological Exhibition at the BA

Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director of the Library of Alexandria inaugurates on Sunday, 9 March 2008 an exhibition entitled “Dressed like Gods”, which is held from 9 to 29 March 2008 at the BA. The exhibition is held under the auspices of HE Sergio Vela, President of the National Council for Culture and the Arts of Mexico.
HE Ambassador Alfonso de Maria y Campos, Head of National Institute of Anthropology and History, Mexico; HE Ambassador Jaime Nualart, Ambassador of Mexico in Egypt; and HE Hosna Rachid, Honorary Consul of Mexico in Alexandria will inaugurate the Exhibition .
The Exhibition comprises of 58 works reflecting the nature of man in the pre-Spanish era and illustrating through sculpture and artistic ornaments an overflowing exuberance of clothes, feathers, ornaments and other elements.
For the ancient dwellers of Oaxaca, Mexico, every act in their lives was driven by religion. Archaeology shows that the members of the privileged social class were dressed in their finest clothes and ornaments for their funeral and were placed in richly decorated tombs with abundant offerings. In this light, the attire reveals and reflects the worldview of those societies, and the hierarchical position of the person wearing it.
The Exhibition will be held in the BA Conference Centre, West Exhibition Hall.
