Celebrations of the World Environmental Day 2009

Alexandria—On 7 May 2009, the first celebration of the World Environment Day (WED) was held at the BA. Co-organized by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Bank Public Information Center (PIC)- BA Depository Library, the celebrations was attended by several officials and public figures.

Dr. Mohamed Said El-Dakkak, Secretary –General of the National Democratic Party and BA General Counsel, said that the environmental issue is an issue of life as it is an authentic human right. He pointed out that the earth have had enough of human practices that only contribute to its destruction.

Dr. Amal Hosni, Coordinator of the UNEP, in Egypt stated that environmental issues have lately become top priorities. She also announced an international conference to be held in Sharm El-Sheikh in November to discuss issues related to the environment and climate change.

On the environment in Alexandria, Engineer Tarek El-Qiey stated that Alexandria suffers from many environmental problems that cannot be overcome by laws alone. He urged the BA and the civil society to raise awareness about environmental issues and global warming.

Actress Safeya El-Emari asserted the importance of collaborating for saving Mother Earth from environmental dangers. She also pointed out to the launching of a national campaign under the auspicious of HE Suzanne Mubarak, First Lady of Egypt to promote environmental and energy protection.

Media man Khairy Ramadan, pointed out that the Egyptian Media lack environmental awareness. He added that Egyptian newspapers coverage on environmental issues is very poor and concluded that preserving the environment benefits humanity at large.
