Promoting Awareness on Road Safety at the BA

Alexandria—Shell Egypt and the BA organized an awareness session on Road Safety, on Saturday, 10 May 2009. It was presided over by Basil Shaaban, Professional Racing Driver; and Egyptian Actor Khaled Abol Naga; and presented by Amy Mowafi, Managing Director of Enigma Magazine. The session aimed to promote road safety in an effort to help reduce one of the highest traffic accidents and mortality rates in the Arab world.

Khaled Abol Naga is an internationally acclaimed award winning actor with an outstanding resume of humanitarian activities. In his capacity as UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, Khaled Abol Naga has shown unmatched commitment to addressing several issues affecting children in Egypt including HIV/AIDS, female circumcision, homeless children and adolescents’ development.

Basil Shaaban is the United Nations World Youth Ambassador for Road Safety, and the first and only Arab to be competing in the Formula 3 Euro series making him the highest–placed Arab on the “Formula 1 Ladder”. Shaaban has made it his personal mission to promote increased awareness of Road Safety in the Middle East.

Shaaban and Abol Naga illustrated the global impact of road traffic crashes in the Middle East. Their presentations focused on the dangers of speeding, distraction caused by the use of mobile phones, and the importance of using seatbelts.

The road safety campaign consists of series of sessions targeted at school students and youth.
